Use a foot designed for the job. Original equipment Nolting hopping foot. Nolting machines usually ship with the high visibility foot or ruler foot.
High Vix (visibility) Foot - ships on most new machines. The 1/2" round thinner wall foot with a side shank offers the greatest visibility for hand guided quilting.
Ruler Foot - shipped on many machines, offers a sturdy foot for working with rulers and templates.
Spoon Foot - has a 1.5" cupped shape that easily rides over seams and on/off the side of the quilt when quilting pantos.
Couching Foot - has a very small hole for feeding lighter weight yarn directly under the needle for doing decorative couching
Open Toe Foot - is similar to the ruler foot in size and shape of the foot, but the front has a cut out space making it easy to see where the needle is stitching. This food can be used with ruler work. My experience with it - I really like using it because of the greater visibility. (Price is $105)
Note: changing from the high viz to any other foot, or any of the feet to the high viz may require adjusting the height of the hopping foot. The clearance under the foot in the down most position and the throat plate should be the thickness of a dime.
